National Apprenticeship Week: Jade McDermott

We spoke to Jade McDermott who is currently a Claims Handler in our Plymouth office. Jade started working for TH March September 2015 as an admin apprentice. Here is what she had to say about her Apprenticeship experience.

Who or what inspired you to become an apprentice?

I knew I never wanted to go to university and if I’m honest I didn’t know what I wanted to do other than start earning money. However whilst looking for a job I found that most employers wanted unrealistic levels of qualifications and experience for someone of my age. An apprenticeship seemed to be a good starting point.

What was the biggest factor in making you decide to do an apprenticeship?

The biggest factor in helping me decide to do an apprenticeship was being able to earn money whilst also gaining the necessary qualifications and experience.

Describe a typical day in the office

I don’t think there is a typical day in the office when working in claims. I deal with a number of different insurances from personal jewellery to commercial motor fleet, dealing with both the customers and insurers so my days are full of variety.

What do you enjoy most about your role, and why?

Insurance is something that people always purchase but hope they never need to use it, however when something does happen which causes the client to need to claim I enjoy being able to make their stressful time as simple as possible. Being a claims handler can be a very rewarding job!

How do you think an apprenticeship has improved or opened up your career options?

It allows you to get your foot in the door and opens up lots of opportunities. I joined T H March as a business admin apprentice in 2015 and I have worked as an accounts handler in our personal jewellery team for a couple of years before moving to claims and becoming a claims handler.

What advice would you give to other people considering an apprenticeship as a route?

I would definitely recommend it as it gets you straight into the world of work, allowing you to earn money, build your knowledge and gain qualifications at the same time.
