Dry January – Reap the Lasting Benefits

During the festive season, it’s common for your alcohol intake to increase due to frequent social events and celebrations. However, after the plethora of parties has passed, it’s important to reassess your drinking habits to keep your health on track in the New Year.

That’s why Alcohol Change UK promotes ‘Dry January’ as a month-long public health campaign every year. This annual campaign challenges Britons to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages for the entire month of January, encouraging participants to ‘reset their relationship’ with alcohol and realise the numerous health rewards of cutting back on drinking.

Indeed, limiting your alcohol intake can generate lasting benefits. For example, health experts revealed that drinking alcohol can cause your body to crave salty and sugary foods. Thus, avoiding alcohol will increase your likelihood of making healthy food choices and potentially help you lose weight. In addition, cutting down on alcohol has been proven to decrease your risk of suffering from insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Drinking less alcohol can also undoubtedly save you money, seeing as you won’t have to spend extra pounds on a pint during social events. Further, a recent study discovered that those who participated in Dry January last year ended up drinking less during the remainder of 2019 as well. Put simply, this campaign is the gift that keeps on giving.

Start 2020 off on a healthy note this year by taking part in Dry January. Here are some top tips to help you stay sober throughout the month:

  • Track your success—Consider using a checklist, online tracker or health app to help you log your drinking habits. Doing so will further motivate you to steer clear of alcohol during the month and allow you to visualise your progress.
  • Find a healthy substitute—Especially if you are a social drinker or find yourself drinking out of habit, it’s important to look for a healthy substitute beverage to take the place of alcohol this month. This could include sparkling water, coffee or tea. In addition, try to encourage your friends and loved ones to engage in social activities that don’t involve drinking to help you avoid temptation.
  • Implement a reward system—As the month progresses, be sure to reward yourself for avoiding alcohol. Healthy rewards include getting a massage, taking a long bath or watching a movie.
  • Stay active—Keeping yourself moving will give you less time to think about having a drink. Try to stay as active as possible by joining a local gym, signing up for an exercise class or going on daily walks
