How to Eat Healthy While Saving Money

For many people, eating a healthy and balanced diet is a familiar goal. However, it can be difficult to maintain a commitment to these aspirations due to the prices of fresh produce and healthy foods. Fortunately, people who want to eat healthy on a budget have a number of steps to consider:

  • Plan ahead. Before a trip to the supermarket, plan meals for the week based on what you already have at home. Then, make a list of missing ingredients. In addition, avoid shopping while hungry, as this may make you more likely to spend more and purchase snacks that may be high in fat or sugar.
  • Eat more vegetables. Meat and fish may often be the most expensive things on your shopping list. Replacing meat in certain dishes with additional vegetables can make meals healthier while being more affordable.
  • Try cheaper options. Consider purchasing value brands instead of premium products. Similarly, frozen fruit and vegetables can provide the same nutrients and health benefits as their fresh counterparts while usually being more affordable.
  • Time your trips. Many supermarkets may reduce prices for fresh items nearing their expiry date. These discounts often become available in the evening, but conduct research regarding supermarkets in your area to find the best potential for deals.
  • Avoid waste. According to the NHS, the average UK family with children throws away approximately £60 worth of food every month. Eating leftovers for lunch, limiting your purchases to what you are certain you will eat and freezing unused food are good steps for limiting waste.
