Getting engaged at Christmas: five steps to achieving the perfect festive proposal

Here are five ways to make your proposal extra special if you are planning to get engaged this Christmas.

How do you make Christmas with your beloved even more special? Pop the question, of course! More couples get engaged between 24 December and 1 January than at any other time of the year, and it’s an especially classic time to ask that momentous question.

But if you are planning to get down on one knee this Christmas, we propose that you do it in style – and here’s how:

  1. Research your ring

An engagement ring is one of the most important items of jewellery you’ll ever give or receive, so it’s important to get it right.

It helps if you can narrow down the type of diamond shape you want. Every shape (also known as a cut) is priced differently—and each has a different price per carat. Round cuts are the most expensive, whereas pear and marquise are less pricey.

Don’t limit yourself to diamonds, though. Coloured gemstones, including sapphire, ruby and emerald, are a beautiful – and increasingly popular – choice for engagement rings.

And don’t forget to pay attention to your metal. It’s easy to get dazzled by the stone but have a think about where it will sit. Traditionally, engagement rings (and wedding bands) are made from yellow gold, white gold, silver, or platinum—although in recent years rose gold has emerged as a fresh, modern alternative.

If you’re unsure, consider working directly with a jeweller. They can provide expert advice and explain the process involved.

  1. Pick the perfect location

Now you’ve chosen your ring, it’s time to plan where and when to pop the question.

Decide if your proposal is going to be public or private. Are you going to be surrounded by friends and family, or would you both prefer a quieter, more private moment, maybe at home in front of the fireplace?

This time of year lends itself perfectly to both options but decide what would work best for you as a couple.  Christmas tree decorations, lights, crackers, chocolates, advent calendars – they can all be used to spell out the Big Question. If it’s a white Christmas (it could happen…) you could even write it in the snow.

  1. Revise your speech

Think carefully about the words you will use when you propose to your beloved.

We’re not talking long and complicated, just have a few bullet points in mind for when the nerves kick in. Take this opportunity to tell your partner how happy they make you and what you love about them the most.

  1. Capture the moment

Why not preserve this important moment forever? If it’s a private proposal, you could set up a hidden camera or for more public proposals, hire a photographer or ask a friend to do the honours.

  1. Plan the day

Make sure you factor in what’s going to happen after the proposal to make the most of your special occasion. Whether it’s an ice-skating session, a romantic dinner, moonlit walk or a celebration with family and friends, try to make the moment last as long as possible.

There are many special events taking place during the festive season. Choose something that you and your new fiancé can do together to enjoy your day.

Lastly, don’t forget to preserve and protect your engagement ring – and your other precious jewellery items – with our bespoke jewellery and watch insurance.
