Emily Conybeare entered TH March as part of our Apprenticeship Scheme in September 2017. In her short time with TH March, she won Young Achiever of the Year at the CII Plymouth/Cornwall awards. Emily is now an Admin Account Handler in our Personal Insurance team. We managed to catch up with Emily and ask her about her experience as an Apprentice.

Who or what inspired you to become an apprentice?

I really wanted to be learning on the job, going to university never appealed to me. Having the option to do an apprenticeship definitely helped to motivate me at school and with my brother being successful with his career after starting as an apprentice, this definitely inspired me too.

What was the biggest factor in making you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I had already decided that I didn’t want to go to university so an apprenticeship was the much more appealing option as you can work and earn whilst learning, without the pressure of having debt.

Describe a typical day in the office.

A typical day in the office for me at TH March is coming into the office at 8 am and clearing my diary. Then at 8.30am, I go on the phones until 9 am doing quotations. Then until my lunch, I work on the very busy inbox/knowledge base. After my lunch, I cover the phones again for an hour. Once I have finished on the phones I then go back to the inbox/knowledge base until 5 pm.

What do you enjoy most about your role and why?

I enjoy lots of things about my role but the main thing I enjoy is working on the inbox/knowledge base. The best part is having a valuation with all the information we need so we just have to issue the documentation.

How do you think an apprenticeship has improved or opened up your career options?

Being an apprentice has helped me in many ways (confidence, maturity, etc), it has meant that I have gained qualifications whilst working and after coming straight from school. Therefore, being an apprentice has meant that I have worked for a company and gained their support, hopefully providing further career options in the future.

What advice would you give to other people considering an apprenticeship as a route?

Always go for the option which you think is best for you. An apprenticeship opens up just as many options for you and you are earning and learning as you go.
