Are you looking to get engaged but don’t know your ring finger size?

The biggest part of choosing an engagement ring is picking the right size. There are a few things to consider, from your finger shape to the thickness of the band. You don’t want to lose it to the bathroom sink whilst washing your hands or for it to be unbearably tight that you hate wearing it.

There are a few ways you can figure out your ring size…

The paper band method

You can use a piece of paper to figure out your finger size. You will need a piece of paper no more than 1.4cm wide and a pen.

  • Simply wrap the paper around the base of your ring finger.
  • With a pen, mark the point where the paper overlaps.
  • Measure the length of the paper from the starting point to the pen mark.
  • Once you have the measurement, use a ring size chart to find the appropriate conversion.

Some top tips if using this method:

  • After wrapping the paper around the base of your finger, make sure you can remove it over your knuckle fairly easily. If your knuckle is a lot bigger than the base of your finger, take two measurements (base and knuckle size) and go for something in between. The ring needs to fit over your knuckle, but not so loose that it can easily slide off.
  • If you’re in between two sizes, go for the larger size.
  • The best time to measure your finger is at the end of the day when your fingers are at their largest. You don’t want to measure your finger when you’re cold as it can be up to half a size smaller.

Already have a ring?

Do you already own a ring that fits your ‘engagement ring’ finger?

If so, simply measure straight across the inside edge of the ring with a ruler. Make sure to measure in millimeters and then use a conversion chart.

Head to the jeweller

If you’re worried about measuring the size yourself, then you can always go to a trusted jeweller and get your finger measured professionally. They usually tend to have a large keychain with many sizes.

You can also try on a variety of engagement ring styles to see what you prefer and what size feels most comfortable.

Worried about picking the wrong size?

Engagement rings aren’t cheap and we know it can be worrying if you’ve picked the wrong size, especially if you opted for a surprise proposal or you’ve ordered your ring online. Don’t worry, resizing engagement rings is fairly common.

If you’re unsure of what size to choose, it’s always better to go larger as they are easier to be resized. Be careful though as some engagement rings can’t be resized, so always double check. Most of the time you can exchange your purchase within 30 days, so be sure to check the return policy.
