The Modern Age – The mid-20th century saw significant advances in the development of quartz watches, with battery-powered oscillators for far greater accuracy and timekeeping. Digital watches burst onto the scene in the 1970s, representing the age of computers and multifunctional timepieces. In recent years, smartwatches have effectively shrunk down computers to the size of a normal wristwatch, connecting us via Bluetooth to our technological world.

This can include heart health (spotting any unusual heart rhythms, for example), sleep patterns that may indicate a risk of sleep apnoea, the body’s stress levels, and early warning signs of other medical conditions.

Holographic displays

There is no need to sacrifice aesthetics for functionality, and watches of the future will blend traditional craftsmanship with advanced technology. Smart hybrid watches combine visually pleasing analogue dials with smart features such as notifications, fitness tracking, and mobile payments. This will appeal to both purists and technology lovers by merging heritage and innovation, which are becoming essential for functioning in the modern world.

Atomic precision

If you’re honest, atomic precision isn’t really a necessity (unless you’re in the International Space Station or the captain of a nuclear submarine, perhaps). Watches that boast atomic-clock synchronisation to an accuracy of 1.5 seconds per thousand years are more about bragging rights than practicalities. Once the preserve of NASA, atomically precise high-tech watches could potentially become available to the mass market in the future. Whether or not they become popular will depend on the price point and just how wide the appeal really is.

Advanced materials

Luxury watches boast premium materials such as gold, platinum, and precious jewels. In the future, more advanced materials may become more common in the production of high-end watches. Already, materials such as forged carbon and titanium are used to create lighter watches that are stronger and more durable than those made from precious metals, while sapphire glass and flexible OLED screens minimise battery drain while maintaining that refined look. The development of micro- and precision-engineering in watchmaking also allows once-bulky watches to become slimmer and lighter without compromising strength or reliability.

Sustainable watches

Sustainability is infiltrating every part of our lives, including the future of watches. Recycled metals and biodegradable materials appeal to more mindful buyers and have become a major USP for brands, alongside features such as solar-powered movements and low-waste manufacturing processes. Eco-friendly watches do not mean low quality, and the concept aligns well with luxury brands that take their environmental responsibility very seriously.

Challenges facing future watch technology

The future of watches, however, faces a few challenges. For those that include ultra-modern technologies such as AI integration, Augmented Reality, payment capabilities, and biometric monitoring, there is concern about data privacy. Any electronic device can technically be ‘hacked’, and advanced electronic watches are no exception. Much of the information is stored not on the device but in the Cloud. If a watch is hacked, it’s the data storage that’s at risk, and that could include sensitive information such as bank account details and medical records.

Another concern is that while the watches of the future are advancing at an almost exponential pace, battery technology remains very limited. It’s all very well having an atomically-calibrated watch that keeps incredible time, but that’s no use if the battery goes flat quickly. Battery technology needs to keep pace with watch development, and at the moment, that’s not the case.

Finally, how much does all this advancement cost? Watches of the future need to have price points that appeal to the target audience. While there will always be a market for high-end luxury watches, technology is all about making the modern world more affordable for everyone. Currently, AI, AR, and holographics are still expensive, while modern materials are no more cost-effective to use than traditional products. Especially in the highly competitive mid-range price bracket, watches need to appeal to buyers by carefully considering which elements they use in their next generation of high-tech watches.

Will traditional watches still be popular in the future?

The popularity of brands like Rolex, TAG Heuer, Cartier, and Omega demonstrates that, at the upper end of the market, traditional watches remain highly valued. That popularity won’t be diminished by the advent of holographic watches or biometric technology.

Will future watches have a better battery life?

Hopefully. Without some serious research and development into battery technology, watches of the future could take a while to become mainstream. Batteries are currently the main thing holding back watch development.

Are smartwatches the future of watches?
